Our first Habitat home was completed in May 1998, and Habitat volunteers have worked alongside our future homeowners ever since.
In 2024, we constructed house #15, and this one was special in several ways. It’s an energy-efficient, alpine-style A-frame that was constructed on a hillside above the North Umpqua River on property where a survivor of the 2020 Archie Creek Wildfire lost her home.
Over 100 homes were lost to the Archie Creek Wildfire, and in 2021 our volunteers were some of the first on site to help with recovery by constructing dozens of equipment sheds and well/pump houses to restore a fresh water supply as property owners began their pathway to recovery.
Umpqua Valley Habitat continues to play an active role in the disaster preparedness network in Douglas County. As part of our commitment to the community, annually we offer a disaster preparedness training course with the goal of building confidence and a sense of security for homeowners and their families as well as for at-risk populations.
Umpqua Valley Habitat began offering home repair services in 2018. To date, we have completed over 70 critical repairs to help improve safety, livability and accessibility for our low-income neighbors, including seniors, veterans and others in need who live in our communities.
Our Habitat volunteers have built wheelchair ramps, repaired collapsing floors, installed windows and doors, replaced dangerous porches and decks, and completed other critical home repair projects.
In 2023, Umpqua Valley Habitat purchased 20 lots in Riddle, OR, located along I-5, 23 miles south of Roseburg, where we will be constructing our Twin Oaks Neighborhood. We were successful in obtaining a reservation of $1.25 million in funding through Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS) to help construct the first six homes and build the necessary infrastructure (road, power, storm drain, sewer, water) to serve those homes.
In 2024, we completed the civil engineering plans, met permitting requirements and selected our six partner families. In June 2025 we broke ground on the infrastructure, and in July we will begin working alongside our partner families to build their Habitat homes.
This summer, Umpqua Valley Habitat will open its first Habitat ReStore at 1026 NE Diamond Lake Blvd, Roseburg - across from the Roseburg Library. Today, 60% of U.S. Habitat affiliates operate at least one Habitat ReStore in their geographic service area. In 2021, Habitat ReStores celebrated their 30th anniversary with over 1,000 locations in seven countries.
Habitat ReStores play an integral part in Habitat’s mission, bringing financial support for our work and offering a unique opportunity for many in the community to experience and interact with our organization.
Habitat ReStores are independently owned stores operated by local Habitat for Humanity affiliates that accept donations and sell home improvement items to the public at a discounted price. Net proceeds generated from each store are used as unrestricted funding to offset affiliate costs and to promote the Habitat for Humanity mission within communities.
